This blog is about how I developed a relationship with inspiration. Instead of feeling subservient to its ever-shifting winds and dry spells, I found a simple solution to summon my muses. The short answer is to draw anything. Whoever said we needed to know what to draw all the time?
Don’t get me wrong; I love feeling inspired and all lit up. My muses grace me with glorious insights, supernova excitement, and profound knowledge, just not always when I want (or need) it. Waiting for a novel idea to tilt the Earth off its axis is a danger zone that could not only destroy the planet but lead to creative stagnation, lack of practice, and worse, not creating.
So one day I decided to draw anything, preferably subject matter, that resonated, but it wasn’t necessary. For example, I drew a meditating frog statue in my house because it made me smile. Isn’t a smile reason enough?
Drawing anything begged the question, which comes first: the motivation, inspiration, or the action? Well, the first two are a crap shoot. In my experience, it’s the action that is the sure thing. Not only that, but it wakes up our muses. Taking action is like throwing cold water on them. You’ve got to meet inspiration halfway and then, watch the magic happen or not. Either way, I or you can’t lose. Practice, practice, and practice, right?
I hope this blog will inspire you as much as it does me!
