“I Don’t Know What to Draw.”
I found a solution to the declaration, “I don’t know what to draw.” The short answer is to draw anything. Whoever said we needed to know what to draw all the time? Is there an art law about it?
Dry spells are bound to happen. The key is to not let these moments spiral out of control into artist block.
Just Draw something,
anything and more often than not you’ll be pleasantly surprised and sometimes amazed. You won’t have to debate, overthink, skip the internal committee meeting with your inner critic, and no need for permission or grand concepts. Just draw something, anything.
This simple tweak in the creative approach especially during dry spells keeps creative momentum going.
Don’t get me wrong, I love when my muses grace me with glorious insights, supernova excitement, and profound knowledge in a millisecond, but waiting for a novel idea to pop into my head is a danger zone. Waiting can cause a lack of enthusiasm, and worse, not creating for long stretches.
By drawing anything we learn to meet inspiration halfway – and let our muses lunge into action and take over. A large red vase suddenly morphs into an abstract or Impressionist style. Or a statue of a meditating frog tells a story.
Drawing anything answers the question: Which is better, motivation, inspiration, or action? In my humble opinion the first two are a crap shoot. I wouldn’t manage my money at the mercy of divine influence or rogue stimuli so why would I do so with my art?
So let’s keep drawing, drawing anything, keep it moving and see where our Art takes us.
